George Hillebrecht bought his first parcel of the ranch in Escondido in 1924, and continued to buy adjoining parcels as he could afford them, until he had 150 acres. His parents were citrus farmers from Orange County, and he chose this area because the land was affordable and they had a promising source of local water. George planted valencia oranges and lemons from his own nursery, and later planted fuerte avocados. He retired in the mid 50’s and his son Ben, Laura’s father, continued planting

The store, open Tuesday through Sunday, also carries preserves, marmalades, estate honey, olive oil, and a rotating schedule of freshly baked breads from local bakers.

Fluegge Egg Ranch has produced eggs in North San Diego County for 70 years, founded in 1956 by Walter and Lucy Fluegge and now spanning four generations of the family. The ranch supplies Southern California stores and restaurants and runs a farm stand at the corner of its Valley Center property on North Lake Wohlford Road, open Tuesday through Sunday with cartons, flats, and checks straight from the farm.

Bates Nut Farm is a family nut farm and store in Valley Center, California, on the 100-acre ranch Gilbert and Beatrice Bates bought in 1921. The free Farm Zoo, with alpacas, goats, sheep and a mini-donkey, is open daily 9am to 5pm.
