High Country Alpaca Ranch breeds alpacas on 24 acres of pinon and juniper at 7,560 feet near Fence Lake, 21 miles north of Quemado. John and Carolyn Fifield started the ranch in 2009 and keep about 32 alpacas alongside Great Pyrenees guardian dogs and chickens. Visitors can camp or book the two-bedroom bunkhouse, and a small mercantile stocks snacks and drinks. Hiking and stargazing come with the high-desert setting.
