Hays Honey And Apple Farm

Bosque Farms, NM

Hays Honey and Apple Farm in Bosque Farms began in 2006 when Ken Hays took up beekeeping to treat his allergies — now a three-generation commercial bee operation and productive apple orchard in the Rio Grande Valley. Visitors taste honey straight from the hive, shop beeswax gifts, and can even join beekeeping workshops.

Nichols Ranch and Orchards

Nichols Ranch grows u-pick cherries and apples at 6,800 feet in Cottonwood Canyon above La Luz, with apricots, plums, pears, quince, and figs coming in through the season. Cherry picking usually starts in June; apples run from mid-August into October. The family has farmed and ranched in Otero County since 1882 and also raises grass-fed beef. From the orchard, visitors get long views over the Tularosa Basin toward White Sands.

Romero's Orchard

Embudo, NM

Clovis Romero has farmed this Embudo Valley orchard since 1964, working more than 270 apple trees his father planted a century ago, including Red and Golden Delicious, Romes, Winesaps, McIntosh, and heirloom summer apples. He also grows peaches, apricots, pears, and Italian plums. The farm sells fruit and offers pick-your-own from around Labor Day through the Dixon Studio Tour in early November. The Romero family settled the valley in the 1700s.

U-Pick Mesilla Valley Apples Burke Orchard

Las Cruces, NM

Francis Burke planted these 400-plus apple trees in the mid-1970s, and the orchard now bills itself as the last u-pick apple farm in the Mesilla Valley. Picking runs from mid-August through September, Thursday to Sunday. The trees carry tart Jonathans that bake into good pie plus several Delicious varieties, and the farm sells fresh apple pie too. It sits on Shalem Colony Trail northwest of Las Cruces along the Rio Grande.

Valhalla Orchards, LLC

Arrey, NM

Valhalla Orchards planted more than 500 peach trees in 2014 and now runs both commercial sales and u-pick peaches, with apricots in the mix too. The orchard sits off I-25 at Arrey, between Truth or Consequences and Hatch in Sierra County, and delivers to select New Mexico grocers during the season. Peach picking depends on the summer crop, so the farm posts timing on its Facebook page each year.
