Visitors hike out with a hand saw and cart, then pay $2 for baling on the way out. The same farm makes maple syrup and hay in its other seasons, and sells handmade wreaths at the stand. Chainsaws, drones, and dogs aren't allowed on the property.

Bear Swamp Orchard grew from 5 to about 60 apple varieties on 6 certified-organic acres in Ashfield after opening in 2006. It made apple brandy and hard ciders with wild-yeast fermentation only, no sulfites or filtering, and ran U-pick apples each fall alongside vinegar, jams, and maple syrup. The orchard has since closed; owners announced the closure on Instagram, thanking customers for their support.
