The Ideals Organic farming is broadly defined as a farming system that respects the balance of natural cycles and works as much as possible within those natural cycles. Practically for us at Many Hands it means that we use foliar nutritional applications, natural rock powders, vegetable meals, crop rotation, heavy mulches, wood chips, and corrugated cardboard, cover crops, and animals in rotation with vegetables and fruits. We extend the season on both ends with the use of unheated hoop houses.

Odd Pine Farm is a five-acre pick-your-own blueberry operation in Ashburnham, growing four varieties of highbush berries through the month of July. The picking rows are handicap accessible, and picnic tables with umbrellas sit near the entrance for anyone who wants to eat before or after filling a container — bring your own, they don't supply them. Season length depends on the weather, so call ahead before driving out.

Old Frog Pond Farm

Old Frog Pond Farm & Studio in Harvard is one of New England's few certified organic pick-your-own orchards — saved and reshaped by sculptor Linda Hoffman, who pairs apples and PYO blueberries and raspberries with an annual outdoor sculpture exhibit, poetry, and Zen meditation events. The self-serve farmstand carries fruit jams, honey, herbal tea, and calendula oil under the philosophy "Feed the Soil, Heal the Earth."

Pakeen Farm

Canton, MA

Pakeen Farm in Canton has been in the same family since 1899, and 150 of its acres are permanently protected under a 1994 conservation restriction with the Trustees of Reservations. The farm added Christmas trees in 1993, a CSA in 2009, and a fall harvest season — pumpkins, apples, hot cider, mini donuts — starting in 2012. It's a working farm first; the retail side grew up around it slowly, one decade at a time.

The Herb Hill Micro-Dairy is a diversified family farm in Pepperell, Massachusetts, 43 miles northwest of Boston, now in its 17th year as a Massachusetts-licensed raw goat's milk producer — does hand-milked twice daily on organic pasture, no hormones or antibiotics. The regenerative, holistically managed farm also sells certified organic eggs, certified organic meat chickens, and a seven-month organic vegetable CSA.

Upswing Farm

Upswing Farm is a certified organic vegetable and flower farm in Pepperell, Massachusetts, farmed on leased land around MetroWest from 2016 until the farmers secured their own ground in 2021. The CSA share program is the backbone of the business — with on-site pickup, distributions in Holliston, Ashland, and Hopkinton, and a Wednesday–Thursday farm stand during the season.
