Casey's U-Pick is a pick-your-own farm on Berry Road in Apulia Station, in the hills south of Syracuse. Berries are the usual summer draw for u-pick farms in this part of Onondaga County. Crop calendar and hours aren't posted online.

Charlies U-Pick blueberries

Chenango Forks, NY

Charlie's U-Pick sells blueberries by the pound off Jackson Hill Road in Chenango Forks, in Broome County north of Binghamton. The patch opens when berries ripen, generally July into August. Beyond that, little is documented online, so call first to confirm the field is open and the berries are on before heading up.

DuBois Farms U-Pick

Highland, NY

DuBois Farms in Highland runs pick-your-own for raspberries, peaches, apples, grapes, tomatoes, and pumpkins from June into late November, on the west side of the Hudson south of New Paltz. Beyond the fields there's a pizzeria and ice cream shop, a bakery known for apple cider donuts, farm animals, and a tavern pouring local hard cider, craft beer, and wine. Entry runs $5 weekdays, $10 weekends.

Greg's U-Pick Farm

Clarence Center, NY

Greg's U-Pick Farm opens its fields for strawberries in June, then blueberries, vegetables and cut flowers through July and August, with a pumpkin patch in fall. The farm runs spring, summer and fall CSA shares and keeps a farm store and bakery on site in Clarence Center, northeast of Buffalo. School field trips and barnyard visits fill out the season. Open Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays.

Henderson's U-Pick

Penn Yan, NY

Henderson's is a four-generation family vegetable operation on Himrod Road in Penn Yan, in the Finger Lakes' Yates County. The roadside stand sells what the family picks, with pick-your-own available on some crops, cabbage among them. This is a working produce farm rather than an agritourism attraction, so selection follows the growing season from summer into fall.

Hoover's U-Pick Blueberries

Penn Yan, NY

Hoover's U-Pick Blueberries opens its bushes for pick-your-own on Baldwin Road in Penn Yan, at the head of Keuka Lake in Yates County. Blueberry picking here runs through midsummer, from mid-July into August, when the Finger Lakes crop comes ripe. Bring your own containers for u-pick.

Kelder's Farm in Kerhonkson, in New York's Hudson Valley, grows fun memories along with 50+ fruits, vegetables, and flowers for u-pick throughout the season. More than 35 farm attractions, a taproom, and festival after festival — tulips, strawberries, sunflowers, animals, pumpkins, and fall fun — make it a full-day family destination, with season passes for unlimited visits.

Kuhn's U-Pick Blueberries

Oxford, NY

Kuhn's U-Pick Blueberries grows five varieties on four acres in Oxford, in Chenango County's Route 12 valley. Picking runs from the Monday after July 4th into early August, with mid-July the peak; a gallon bucket is $16, cash only. The farm also sells asparagus by the pound in May and June. Larzelere Grape U-Pick

Keuka Park, NY

Larzelere Grape U-Pick lets visitors pick their own grapes on State Route 54A in Keuka Park, along the west arm of Keuka Lake in Yates County. This is core Finger Lakes grape country, where Concord and other varieties ripen through September and October. Grape u-pick is seasonal and short, so call in early fall to check when the vines are ready.

Apples have been a staple in the American diet since the settlers first landed at Plymouth Rock. They brought apple seeds, saplings and cuttings with them to establish orchards in the New World. In the 1640s the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area known as Mecox, named for beautiful Mecox Bay. Castile, NY

Pankow U-Pick Orchards runs pick-your-own fruit on Glen Iris Road in Castile, right at the edge of Letchworth State Park in Wyoming County. The orchard opens for apple picking in fall and may carry other tree fruit or berries earlier in the season. Its spot near the park's south end makes it an easy add-on to a Letchworth visit. Confirm picking dates before you go.

Riverside U-Pick Berries and Pumpkins

Phoenix, NY

Pick-your-own is the whole point here: summer berries followed by a pumpkin patch in the fall, on Pendergast Road outside Phoenix. The farm sits in Oswego County's produce country north of Syracuse, close to the Oswego River. Families come for the seasonal picking rather than a year-round stand.

Saunderskill Farms

Accord, NY

Saunderskill Farms in Accord, New York has been growing since 1680 — one of the few farms in the nation to hold the USDA's rare Tricentennial Award, still worked by generations of Schoonmakers. The market and bakery serve fresh cider donuts, the farm's own strawberries, greenhouse tomatoes, and asparagus, while the greenhouse fills with annuals and hanging baskets and summer brings pick-your-own blueberries and flowers.

Stan Rathbun U-Pick Strawberries

Stan Rathbun runs a pick-your-own strawberry patch in the Almond area of Allegany County, at ZIP 14808 in New York's Southern Tier. Strawberry season here is short, usually a few weeks in June, and u-pick fields open only while the berries last. Call at the start of June to check whether the patch is ready and picking.

Strawberry Fields U-Pick lets you pick your own strawberries on East Genesee Street Road in Auburn, in the Finger Lakes. Strawberry picking here runs a short window, usually from mid-June into early July depending on the spring. Call ahead before driving out; berry fields open and close day to day with the weather and what's ripe. Cayuga County farmland surrounds the site.

Summer Breeze Strawberries Stand-up U-pick

Castile, NY

Summer Breeze grows pick-your-own strawberries in Castile, in Wyoming County near Letchworth State Park. The "stand-up" name points to raised or elevated beds that let pickers harvest without bending to the ground, easier on the back than field rows. Strawberry season in this part of western New York runs through June into early July.
